Phalloplasty Surgery

What to Expect After Your Phalloplasty

After your Phalloplasty procedure you'll be taken to the Recovery Room where specially trained nurses will monitor your vital signs and attend to you until you are ready to leave (usually in an hour or so). You'll be driven to where you are staying, either home, the hotel or to a nearby friend’s house where you'll rest until the next morning.

Dr. Giunta will check your condition the next morning and apply new dressings (bandages). He'll also give you instructions, both written and verbally, concerning your post-operative condition, including advice on your daily routine and activities. Then, you’re free to go home.

During your healing process, Dr. Giunta will be in contact with you by telephone so he can monitor your progress. He is also available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for any questions you might have about your condition.

If a problem arises that Dr. Giunta feels cannot be handled by telephone contact, he'll instruct you to check with your family doctor or go to the nearest Emergency Room. Dr. Giunta will also be in contact with your doctor(s).

The Second Stage Fat Transfer is done after three months (not before), and is performed only if you need or desire more girth.

Postoperative Phalloplasty Instructions

Wear the foam dressing for 8 days. Showering is permitted only with Saran Wrap covering the incision and the foam dressing. This allows the bandages to remain dry and intact. When this bandage is removed, please call the office on the next weekday for a follow-up report. Begin using the foam sleeves for support when you go to bed. Wear this sleeve at night for 1 month following surgery.

If you had the lengthening procedure, change the incisional dressing in the pubic area twice daily. Please use the enclosed bacitracin ointment and telfa bandages.

On the day after the surgery, begin stretching the head of the penis for 10 to 15 seconds at a time every 2 hours.

On the fifth day after surgery, begin stretching the head of the penis for 3 to 4 minutes at a time every 2 hours. You must do this for 3 - 4 months.

Continue taking your antibiotics as prescribed until all the medication is finished. Take your medication for pain as prescribed if needed. Do not take Aspirin or Ibuprofen for 2 weeks.

Do not engage in any strenuous activity, heavy lifting or high impact aerobics for 4 weeks from the day of your surgery. Before resuming your exercise routine, consult Dr. Giunta.

Sexual activity: If you only had the fat transference, you may resume sexual intercourse in two weeks. If you had the lengthening procedure, you may resume sexual intercourse 6 weeks.

It is normal to experience discomfort/pain upon erection for a few days. Some bruising and swelling may also be noticed for several weeks.

Do not begin using the weights (optional) for 2 weeks after surgery. Do not use the weights more than 2 hours a day and start with no more than 1 - 2 pounds.

You must re-wrap the penis with Coban (3 - 4 layers) daily for one month to keep the penis pointing downward and straight and to prevent "telescoping," which will clump the fat.

Take Vitamin E - 400 i.u. each twice a day for one month following surgery.

Remember that you must follow these instructions faithfully to help insure ultimate success.
